With rum riding high everywhere from tiki bars to luxury lounges, casual consumers and aficionados alike are developing an appreciation for the complex, rewarding flavors high-end rum has to offer.
At the same time, consumers and producers are both showing an increased concern for sustainability in spirits. And now, our friends at Flor de Caña Rum have built a reputation for utilizing sustainable, fair trade practices to create incredible, world class rum. In recognition of Flor de Caña’s efforts and successes, the International Rum Conference (IRC) has awarded Flor de Caña its highest distinction, “2018 Best Rum Distillery.”
Flor de Caña was recognized last year for their adoption of fair trade practices, and this year’s award goes even further, recognizing Flor de Caña’s successes in other areas, such as the distillery’s running on 100 percent renewable energy and their commitment to protect and foster the wellbeing of their workers and the larger community. In addition to relying on renewable energy, Flor de Caña’s Fair Trade certification means that the rum is produced in compliance with over 300 rigorous social, environmental and labor standards, according to a statement from the company.
In keeping with the company’s Fair Trade certification, Flor de Caña has held itself to a higher standard of conduct for years. According to the company, Flor de Caña has planted 50,000 trees planted annually for more than 12 years, provided a free education program since 1913, and supported free medical services for the Nicaraguan community from 1958 until today. Beginning in 1991, Flor de Caña has also been the number one donor to APROQUEN, an organization which provides free medical services to child burn victims and children with cleft lip or palate. For the past 15 years, the company has supported the American Nicaraguan Foundation (ANF), a non-profit whose purpose is to relieve poverty in Nicaragua.
Paul Rice, President and CEO of Fair Trade USA, praised the company, saying, “Flor de Caña is one of the early trailblazers in this space, and is one of just a few spirits companies to adopt Fair Trade practices in their supply chain. We’re excited by this partnership and the ripple effect that it’s poised to create.”
