Breakthru Salutes Diageo for Workplace Inclusivity

Aug. 16, 2018

It seems like award season is a year-round festival for our supplier partners at Diageo, the company behind such consumer-favorite brands as Captain Morgan, Crown Royal, Smirnoff and many more. Most recently, Diageo North America was recently recognized among the top firms in Diversity MBA's "50 Out Front for Diversity Leadership" and added to the Diversity Best Practices Inclusion Index.

We are thrilled to see our friends at Diageo recognized as a place where diversity is valued. Moreover, we are thrilled that Diageo has one more compelling story to share with consumers who are increasingly influenced by a company’s core values when making purchasing decisions.

Diversity MBA, a national leadership organization, has placed Diageo in the number 13 spot overall this year, a substantial improvement over last year’s solid ranking of 19th. According to a release from Diageo, Diversity MBA also singled out Diageo North America as Best in Class for Workplace Inclusion & Retention and Board Diversity. For this year’s list of the "50 Out Front" companies, Diversity MBA examined over 650 companies on a diverse set of criteria including representation, board diversity, recruitment, workplace inclusion, retention, succession planning and accountability. The organization’s Inclusive Leadership Index identifies companies for best in class recognition that have demonstrated consistent and excellent systems, practices, metrics and impact.

In addition to this recognition, Diageo North America also joined a select subset of companies to land on this year’s Diversity Best Practices Inclusion Index. The company was among 73 organizations that earned a score of at least 65 percent overall. The score is based on how well the company fulfills three criteria: diversity and inclusion practices in recruitment, retention, and advancement; organizational culture; and demographic transparency.

"At Diageo we are proud of our commitments toward building a diverse organization and inclusive culture. To be included in both prestigious indices affirms our ongoing commitment to inclusion and diversity as core to our values," said Alessandra Ginante, Diageo North America's Executive Vice President, Human Resources. "Our values and purpose set the conditions for us to respect the unique contribution each person brings."

Pamela McElvane, CEO of Diversity MBA and publisher of Diversity MBA Magazine, said, "It is important to recognize the effort required to drive results for implementing diversity and inclusion strategies."

At Breakthru, we are thrilled to partner with an organization that is so committed to diversity as Diageo, and we applaud them for their leadership in this area. The company has picked up a staggering number of awards just in the last two years:

2018Diageo earned 100 percent on the Human Rights Campaign Foundation's Annual Corporate Equality Index for LGBTQ Workplace Equality for the 10th consecutive year.

2018 – Diageo received the Human Rights Campaign's Corporate Equality Award.

2018 – Diageo listed as a Top Company for Executive Women by National Association of Female Executives (NAFE) for eighth year.

Congratulations again to our friends at Diageo for their efforts toward a more inclusive industry, and we look forward to working closely with them in the years to come on this and other issues important to the company, including responsible serving/drinking, reducing alcohol-related harm in society through its own Alcohol in Society programs and collaborative partnerships, as well as pursuing environmental sustainability and fighting climate change.
