Anyone in our industry knows that when Diageo sets out a goal, they reach it—and then some.
One of their biggest plans is Society 2030, a holistic, full-court press on a wide range of topics, from responsible drinking and diversity to water protection and sustainability.
Launched with an eye to the future, Society 2030: “Spirit of Progress is Diageo's 10-year action plan to help create a more inclusive and sustainable world. Building on the legacy of our founders to create a positive impact in our company, with our communities and for society. It is how we will continue to celebrate life, every day, everywhere,” according to the company.
With great power comes great responsibility
Diageo is one of the largest, most visible, and most influential spirits companies in the world today, and they are using that power to help promote more responsible relationships between consumers and alcohol. Through the Society 2030 initiative, Diageo has pledged to take a position of leadership on issues of responsible consumption, with a goal of changing the attitudes on drunk driving of five million consumers and educating 10 million additional young people and teachers on the dangers of underage drinking by the year 2030.
The company is also using its position to promote greater diversity and representation in leadership. By 2030, Diageo has pledged to fill 50% of its leadership roles with women, and 45% of leadership positions with ethnically diverse associates.
In addition, Diageo is supporting the long-term health of the hospitality sector through skills initiatives and has pledged to engage with and improve the livelihoods of 200,000 individuals in the hospitality industry through their Learning for Life program by 2030. Diageo Bar Academy will also provide skills and resources to another 1.5 million people.
What’s more, Diageo will also support 150,000 smallholder farms through the sharing of agricultural resources and skills training.
A healthy, working environment
Diageo also has bold, inspiring plans for the natural world. By 2030, the company will reach net-zero carbon emissions for all operations, which will be powered 100% by renewable energy sources. The company is going a step further by partnering with suppliers to cut carbon emissions from the supply chain by 50% and is pledging to use 30% less water to make its products.
Water, in particular, is a big focus for Diageo’s 2030 plan, as they have pledged to support over 150 community water projects around the world and have committed to replenishing more water than is used by the company in water-stressed areas by 2026.
Finally, Diageo aims to achieve zero waste in all direct operations and zero landfill waste throughout their supply chain. And, by 2030, 100% of packaging will be widely recyclable and made with 60% recycled materials.
These goals are lofty, but we believe in Diageo’s ability to meet the challenge. We are honored to be part of this grand undertaking, and we look forward to sharing updates as we move ever closer to the year 2030.
