Casillero del Diablo’s 2018 Vintage is Practically Perfect

12/6/2019

The year 2018 was one for the history books, at least if you’re a winegrower in Chile. The year’s growing season in Chile, a country already known for its favorable climate for grapes, was a perfect storm—or lack of storm.

A wet winter filled the reservoirs across the country’s diverse wine regions, followed by a warm spring without significant frost. Then, a gentle, temperate summer brought both warm weather and cooling fogs, creating a long growing season which allowed grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. The net result is some of the most incredible grapes Chile has produced in recent memory, and an incredible new red wine from our friends at Casillero del Diablo.

A Vintage for the Ages

"The quality of the 2018 vintage in Chile cannot be overstated," said Marcelo Papa, veteran winemaker and Technical Director at Concha y Toro, which owns Casillero del Diablo, in a recent statement. He explained that the “growing season gave us the best conditions I've seen in decades of winemaking in Chile. We were able to harvest the fruit at the precise moment of ripeness, without rushing, which allowed us to achieve wines of great balance, complexity and aromatic expression."

But as incredible as the growing season was, it comes at a time which is even more incredible for Casillero del Diablo. According to the company, the brand is currently outpacing the larger Chilean wine category by 4%, and growing faster than overall imports by 2%, with a staggering growth rate of 29%. This vintage represents a perfect opportunity for consumers to get to know Chilean wine better, or to hone in on the unbeatable wines coming out of Casillero del Diablo. Whether it’s on a store shelf or a wine list, the 2018 Casillero del Diablo looks like an easy win for businesses and wine-lovers. The 2018 Casillero del Diablo Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Carmenere, in particular, are expected to be big hits this year.
