1942 may be the most consequential year in Tequila Don Julio’s history, but 2018 is shaping up to be one of the biggest as well. This year will see the release of two new innovations, available for a limited time only: Reposado Double Cask, starting in summer 2018, and Reposado Private Cask, due in the fall. These hotly anticipated innovations are the first from Tequila Don Julio in six years, and both are expected to sell out quickly.
Double (Cask) Vision
In partnership with one of Diageo’s other flagship brands, Buchanan’s Scotch Whisky, Tequila Don Julio is bringing some of the rich, Scotch flavor profile, to the smooth, agave taste of Don Julio Reposado. The new Tequila Don Julio Reposado, Double Cask, is a limited-edition reposado tequila finished in oak casks used by the blenders at Buchanan's to create their beloved Blended Scotch Whisky.
Don Julio Reposado Double Cask was concocted by Don Julio’s current Master Distiller, Enrique de Colsa, who is continuing the legacy of quality tequila built by Don Julio González. Double Cask is a rich and nuanced take on Don Julio's traditional reposado, which adds hints of whisky on the finish.
This marriage of brown spirits to agave was years in the making. De Colsa perfected the process through tireless experimentation with casks from the myriad Scotch brands within the Diageo portfolio. He ultimately landed on Buchanan's as these casks provided a wonderfully complex, new flavor offering that still allows the notes of Tequila Don Julio's signature Reposado to shine through, according to a statement from the company.
"I spent three years experimenting with various cask options to perfect the flavor of this variant and I'm proud to introduce it to the U.S.,” de Colsa said in a statement from the company. “I found that finishing the tequila for one month in casks used in the making of Buchanan's Blended Scotch Whisky allowed me to create a tequila that perfectly balances the core flavor of Tequila Don Julio as well as the signature flavor of Buchanan's Blended Scotch Whisky. It's an incredibly unique flavor profile that is excellent enjoyed responsibly neat or on the rocks."

The Tequila Don Julio Reposado Private Cask program launches the fall of 2018, taking ultra-premium tequila to a new level. De Colsa hand-selected 300 limited-edition barrels for the program and aged 10 months, which far exceeds even Tequila Don Julio’s stringent standards for what is considered “reposado” tequila, as well as the standards set by the Tequila Regulatory Council. These barrels are available for purchase by participating retailers, and each of these unique barrels will be accompanied by a personalized certificate of authenticity from the brand.
This inaugural innovation kicks off the Private Cask program by paying homage to the name of Don Julio González, whose first innovation, distilled under his own name, was also a reposado.
