October is #MerlotMe month, the time to celebrate the easy-drinking, fruit-forward wine. Started by a California-based company, the #MerlotMe movement dedicates the 10th month of each year to enjoying and honoring the varietal around the world.

According to last year’s American Wine Consumer Preference Survey, 49% of respondents listed merlot as their favorite varietal. Additionally, 74% said red wine was their preferred wine of choice, with 58% of respondents claiming fruity wines as their favorite style.

Merlot fits the bill perfectly for fruity reds according to Barbara Kiefer, Rodney Strong Wine Estates Illinois on-premise market manager.

“It’s soft and supple – it doesn’t have the upfront tannin structure that cabernets do,” Kiefer said, “it’s got more elegance and more finesse.”

Merlot got its start in France, where it was combined with cabernet sauvignon to create the much-admired Bordeaux blend. Winemakers liked how merlot’s soft and fruity notes complimented the cabernet sauvignon. However, when merlot made it to the U.S., American winemakers began producing wines using only merlot grapes, and Americans were very keen on the easy-to-drink red wine.
