2018’s Most Gin-teresting Trends [INFOGRAPHIC]

Aug. 23, 2018

Gins are on the move in recent years, and that’s because many consumers are realizing that not all gins taste like a pine tree.

Gin producers are getting creative with their expressions, experimenting with different botanicals, citrus elements, florals and even berries. Pair those spirits with innovative bartenders who craft eccentric gin cocktails, and that’s an alluring recipe for curious consumers.

Let’s take a look at the latest gin stats and trends.

2018 Gin Trends

In addition to these 2018 findings, we’re looking ahead on what’s to come. We spoke with Breakthru Beverage Group's Regional Director, Craft and Emerging Spirits, Andy Izeluk, to for his take on these emerging gin trends.

What are some popular gin cocktails you’re seeing out in the market?

Andy Izeluk: The classic gin martini will always be a staple. I love seeing the Negroni cocktail coming to the forefront—and not just during Negroni week—especially a frozen Negroni.

The Last Word is by far one of my favorites, too. What can I say? I enjoy gin! Don't get me wrong, you will find some gin cocktails with 10 plus ingredients in them, which is fine, but the classics will also hold a special place!

Pink gins are coming on really strong. What’s your take on why that is?

While the category is picking up in Europe with a variety of different options available, the category here in the U.S. continues to be much smaller of a base. With the boom happening right now around everything rosé, such as sparkling and still wines, ciders and frozé, the pink gin category may see some demand simply based on the color.

What are your favorite gin and food pairings?

Gin can be paired with many dishes and styles of cuisine. For me, the occasion and ambience are a huge factor. A refreshing G&T can cool you off after eating something spicy or you could go down the path of a gin gimlet paired with some fresh seafood.

A favorite of mine consists of a simple gin and soda (garnished with an orange), a charcuterie plate, some close friends and lounging on patio. That, my friends, is a beautiful afternoon.

Any gin predictions?

I am betting my money on barrel aged gins and I love this category because it attracts so many different consumers. What could be better than combining gin with a little bit of wood flavor?

The whiskey category continues to accelerate year after year, yet even veteran whiskey drinkers and newer whiskey fans are looking to broaden their horizons. Look no further, barrel aged gins are your answer!

This trend can be seen across different categories with red wine and beer, but nothing beats a hearty barrel aged gin. I guarantee we will see many new applicants into this category over the next year.
