Breakthru South Carolina Supports Local Students Through Hootie & The Blowfish Charity Concert

Aug. 24, 2017

For the eighth year in a row, Hootie & the Blowfish have teamed up with the Charleston County School District to put on a concert that collects and gives necessary school supplies to thousands of high-poverty elementary students.

“Hootie’s Homegrown Roundup: Back to School Basics” has assisted more than 5,000 students since its inception, and provides much needed goods and services to children who need it most, including haircuts, dental exams, eye screenings, backpacks, shoes, t-shirts, uniforms and basic school supplies. The band’s recent concert series at Daniel Island, an event sponsored by Breakthru South Carolina, Brown-Forman and William Grant & Sons, tasked concert-goers with bringing school supplies to the show that the Blowfish would then deliver to the students, which they did at an August 12th event in downtown Charleston.

“Helping educate the next generation is one of the most important ways of giving back,” said Mark Bryan of Hootie & the Blowfish. “We ask a lot of our fans and every year they answer the call.”

As a sponsor of this year’s concert, Breakthru South Carolina is honored to be able to support the continued charitable work of the band, which has been instrumental for a long time in helping make the South Carolina community a better place to live.

One of our associates, RD Quickel, has been intimately involved in various local charities for years, including Hootie’s Homegrown Roundup, and enjoyed sharing the fulfilling experience with his loved ones.

“My family worked the crayons station at the Roundup and we met hundreds of enthusiastic children,” Quickel said. “It’s very rewarding to know that our efforts put smiles on children’s faces and enabled them to start the school year well-prepared.”
