Why buy fine wine by the bottle when you can buy it by the vineyard?

That might be the philosophy of our friends at Moët Hennessy, who recently entered into a definitive agreement to purchase Château du Galoupet, a Cru Classé vineyard in the Côtes-de-Provence region of southeastern France. The deal to acquire Château du Galoupet is expected to be completed in the second half of 2019, making Château du Galoupet a part of one of the largest French portfolios in the industry.

Located along the coastline in La Londe-les-Maures, Château du Galoupet sits squarely in a unique micro-climate blessed by temperate and salty winds, conducive to elegant wines and consistent yeilds, according to a statement from the company. Widely known for its rosé wines, Château du Galoupet’s history stretches back to the end of the 17th century, and since 1955 the vineyard has held the distinction of Cru Classé, or “First Growth,” an honor bestowed upon the vineyards producing the country’s finest wines, year after year.

In addition to its rosé offerings, which make up about 90 percent of the vineyard’s output, Château du Galoupet also produces red and white wines, all on a vineyard populated by wines with an average age of 25 years, contributing to the character and structure of Château du Galoupet’s wide array of award-winning wines.

After the deal is finalized, Moët Hennessy has said in a statement that it aims to enhance the 89 unplanted hectares on the Château du Galoupet vineyard, “respecting the extraordinary preserved environment and offering a natural foreground.” Moët Hennessy says it looks forward to sharing its own expertise with Château du Galoupet in the development of the domaine and to add a Cru Classé de Provence to the Moët Hennessy portfolio, its first rosé wine.
