Discover the Possibilities of Irish Whiskey

A mainstay of distilled drinks since the 12th century, Irish whiskey is enjoying a strong resurgence. Currently the fastest-growing spirit in the world, Irish whiskey grew more than 20% in 2017, and all signs point to continued growth.

Once considered a niche spirit often enjoyed during St. Patrick's Day, the expansion of distillers and styles now appeals to a wider audience. Here are the four main types of Irish whiskey consumers can choose from.

Single Malt: The whiskey is made using 100% malted barley and distilled in a pot still within a single distillery, a process also commonly associated with Scotch whisky. These may be double or triple distilled.

Single Pot Still: Irish pure pot still whiskey is made from malted and unmalted barley, with up to 5% of other cereals added, and is distilled in a pot still from one single distillery. These whiskeys have more depth when it comes to taste, with a more grainy texture than other whiskey types.

Grain: Grain whiskey uses corn, wheat, rye, and/or barley, which are distilled in a column still. Single grain whiskey comes from only one distillery. This is the rarest of Irish whiskey types and is primarily utilized in blended whiskey. Which leads us to…

Blended: The most common style, blended Irish whiskey is a mixture of any two or more of the styles of malt, pot still, and grain whiskey.
