For Carol, living in an abusive marriage was a 40-year recurring nightmare of which she knew not how to wake up. Carol is not alone – in the U.S., 20 people are physically abused by an intimate partner per minute. Per minute.

Sadly, for her own safety, Carol became an expert at navigating the behavior of her abusive husband. She learned what to say – and what not to say – in order to avoid a nasty situation. In her mind, police couldn’t help. One time, in her 20’s, she summoned the authorities only to witness her husband send both of them to the hospital with serious injuries.

One day, with her husband out of state, Carol was able to send for the police and this time, she safely left her abusive life behind her.

Carol starting coming to Fresh Start Women's Foundation, a nonprofit organization supporting women who need a new beginning. She attended workshops that helped rebuild her confidence, and she was able to learn new professional skills that aided her in starting her own business in appraising antique cars for insurance brokers.

Fresh Start has been there for women like Carol since 1992. It’s their goal to live in a community where all women are able to live a life where they are personally empowered and financially self-sufficient. They offer a wide range of services aimed at improving life skills, building a career, educational scholarship programs and much more.

In the last year alone, Fresh Start has made a significant impact on the lives of many women:

  • 3,100 new clients served
  • 2,882 job placements achieved
  • More than $400,000 in educational scholarships awarded
  • Nearly 100 women started their own business

Those achievements are life-changing, and Breakthru Beverage Arizona is eager to help support Fresh Start’s continued success by having them as a charity partner for the annual Breakthru Beverage Arizona’s Charity Golf Classic, now in its 29th year.

“It’s great to join the efforts of Breakthru Beverage Arizona,” Fresh Start’s Jeff May said. “We are both committed to improving our community as a whole. We’re proud to align with one of Arizona’s premier giving organizations.”

Giving back to the community helped turn Carol’s life around.

In addition to receiving personal and professional assistance, Carol also learned one invaluable skill at Fresh Start, a skill that will allow her to help other women like her find a new life: speaking publicly about domestic violence. In fact, she’s even presented to a senate committee, the Secretary of State, and men in prison that are soon to be released on parole.

Carol’s relationship with Fresh Start helped her start a better life that she deserved.

We at Breakthru Arizona are very proud to support the incredible mission of Fresh Start and all of the life-changing work they have done on behalf of women in Arizona.
