As a part of this year’s coverage for the upcoming annual Breakthru Beverage Charity Golf Classic–teeing off September 29 and 30–Breakthru Arizona is proud to spotlight its charity partners, all of which have been instrumental in making this charity golf tournament a yearly success.

This week’s spotlight: The Dorothy Foundation

For the LaCava family, creating the Dorothy Foundation–an organization with the mission to discover the latest research in cancer prevention and treatment–was a very personal journey.

“My mother, Dorothy, was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 44,” said Sandy LaCava, executive director of the Dorothy Foundation. “We knew very little about the disease in those days.”

It was the 1970s, and there were no specialists or oncologists to treat Dorothy. At the time, the cancer treatment methods were toxic–with only a small window of relief–for the human body. Dorothy’s fight came to an end at the age of 49.

After their mother’s passing, the LaCavas came to the inescapable conclusion that the cure for cancer was not coming fast enough and it was time to take action. Thus, the Dorothy Foundation was born. The organization’s mission is focused on improving cancer research, believing that creating verifiable data will positively alter the landscape in cancer research, treatment and most importantly, prevention.

Recently, the Dorothy Foundation has partnered with leaders in the medical field–including The Biodesign Institute at Arizona State University–to support the development of early diagnosis treatments.

"We understand how important an early diagnosis can be in the fight against cancer and it is the primary reason why we have supported the work of Dr. Stephen Johnston from The Biodesign Institute at ASU,” said LaCava. “It is our hope that his pre-stage one cancer test might become a real game changer for people worldwide. This test has the potential to change the way we diagnose and treat cancer."

In addition to supporting life-saving research, the foundation now has its sights set on building new relationships with cancer treatment centers with the goal of connecting current patients with the opportunity to benefit from the most effective treatment options available.

Partnerships, such as the one with the Breakthru Beverage Charity Golf Classic, help the Dorothy Foundation continue to work towards a world free from cancer. Breakthru Arizona is proud to support the Dorothy Foundation in all of the wonderful work they do in cancer research.
