Attract Adventurous Consumers with South American Wines

Jul. 14, 2015

The first step in effectively selling South American wines is to understand the literal and philosophical rift between the wines of Chile and Argentina.

Separated by the Andes Mountains, Chile and Argentina share the southern portion of the South American continent. While both of these countries are major world wine exporters, each has its own separate winemaking traditions: Argentina is more heavily influenced by Italian culture and winemaking while Chile is inspired by that of the French.

What makes this literal divide in practice and influence all the more fascinating is how diverse Chile and Argentina’s winemaking philosophies are, given the fact that their landscapes are quite similar. Both countries have similar latitudes, altitudes, and water conditions.  The north-south orientation of both countries allows both a full range of temperatures- from sub-tropical conditions in the north (closer to the equator) and cooler climates in the south. Water steadily flows from the Andes Mountains and in both countries, winegrowers have a wide choice of altitude: from sea level to dizzying mountain heights.

Claiming a stake in the dynamic offerings of South American wine is a great way to connect with the new wine consumer, whose inclination to be adventurous when selecting wines is changing the way wines are produced, sold, and enjoyed. Wines from Argentina and Chile are exporting on pace to evolve with the changing face of the wine industry. According to the Gallo Training Academy, Chile is South America's largest wine exporting country and sends two-thirds of its wines abroad each year of production. Meanwhile, Gallo reports that Argentina produces more wine annually than any other South American country and is currently the fifth largest wine producer in the world, ranking immediately behind the United States.
