Stone Brewing doesn’t do anything small, and their newest year-round beer is making a huge splash on store shelves and beer menus nationwide. The brand-new Stone Tropic of Thunder Lager continues Stone Brewing’s storied history of big, bold and flavorful porters, stouts, sours, IPAs, and strong ales beloved by beer drinkers across the country.
Thunderstruck
Now, Stone proudly adds to their boundary-pushing legacy with this unconventional lager, according to a statement from the company. Stone Brewing CEO Dominic Engels assessed the unique position Tropic of Thunder fills, saying, “More than 75 percent of U.S. beer sales are lagers—predominantly from Big Beer,” adding, “so given our history in challenging convention, and our successes in the category of IPAs, we're releasing what I'm affectionately referring to as a ‘lager for IPA lovers.’ It's finely crafted, intensely flavorful and undoubtedly independent, because lagers deserve flavor too.”

Island Hop-ing
Coming in at 5.8% ABV and 45 IBUs, Tropic of Thunder builds on Cashmere, Citra and Mosaic hops, creating a brew with a pleasingly clear, straw yellow color and a fluffy white head. Drinkers are greeted with an aroma of white wine, melon, citrus, and hints of pineapple. The taste is of ripe cantaloupe, citrus and passionfruit, with flavors of fresh hops, white wine, and biscuit. The palate delivers slight sweetness and good bitterness with a dry, clean finish, according to Stone.
Jeremy Moynier, Stone's Senior Manager of Brewing and Innovation, says the beer “is unlike your traditional lager. When we were discussing what our next year-round beer might be we all agreed that we wanted something super flavorful and yet really crushable, all while exemplifying the genre-defying qualities we're known for at Stone. So while we did our signature thing—seeking out the newest and most interesting hops to contribute big flavor—we really stayed focused on producing a balanced beer with classic lager characteristics. It turned out crisp, clean, intensely fruity, and definitely way crushable.”
Tropic of Thunder is now available throughout the U.S. in 12 oz. six-pack cans, 19.2 oz. single-serve cans, and draft.
