The Macallan Edition No. 4 is the latest release in The Macallan’s innovative annual Edition series, a range of whiskies that focus on The Macallan’s commitment to wood and cask. Like previous releases, Edition No. 4 continues the company’s exploration into its approach to whisky making, exposing the layers of detail that go into each and every dram.
While Edition No. 1 and No. 2 highlighted the influence individual casks have on the taste and flavor of whisky, and No. 3 focused on aroma, Edition No. 4 exposes what The Macallan calls the “structure” of the whisky, drawing a strong parallel to how The Macallan’s newly opened distillery is constructed.
The Macallan Edition No. 4 draws this structure from a blend of European and American oak Sherry casks, including some sourced from Tevasa, Jose Y Miguel Martin, Diego Martin Rosado, and Vasyma. The resulting combination creates a zesty, vibrant and invigorative single malt with notes of honey, sweet toffee and citrus fruits.
In addition to the whisky’s structure, the forest green label on Edition No. 4 also ties back to the new distillery, as it resembles the natural green roof atop the structure. The roof was designed to blend into the surroundings and make the distillery feel like a part of the rolling green hills that stud the area.
Unlike the previous releases of the series, Edition No. 4 is the first to be developed under the guidance of The Macallan’s Master Distiller, Nick Savage. In a statement released by The Macallan, Savage described Edition No. 4 as:
“A truly spectacular single malt, delivering a rounded honey and sweet toffee aroma and an intense burst of nutmeg wood spices on the palate. A powerful and invigorating mouthfeel as if standing on top of the new distillery roof in the Speyside breeze. A combination of carefully selected sherry-seasoned oak casks brings out unique refreshing qualities and delivers an unforgettable whisky experience”
