Rachel Barrie: Hall of Famer

In early December 2018, Brown-Forman’s celebrated Master Blender, Rachel Barrie, was honored with her induction into the Whisky Magazine Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame started in 2004 with the induction of celebrated writer Michael Jackson, and since that time has served as the magazine’s “permanent tribute honoring individuals who have made a lasting contribution to the whisky world” according to the magazine, and every year master blenders, distillers, authors or other personalities have been inducted to the hall of fame.

Barrie was one of two women inducted in December, the first women honored with spots in the Hall of Fame. She was honored for her more than 25 years spent in the industry, elevating the art of distilling.

BenRiach’s Golden Move

When your brand has a unique expression, which manages to win gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, putting that expression into your core range is kind of a no-brainer. Such was the opportunity put before BenRiach, one of Brown-Forman’s iconic distilleries, following last year’s SFWSC when their Sherry Wood Aged 12 Years won gold. Made using three styles of sherry cask maturation—full sherry cask maturation, combined with Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry cask finishing—the expression offers layers of fruit sweetness and toasted oak spice with a luscious dessert-like finish, according to Brown-Forman.

Barrie described what makes the expression special, explaining how BenRiach Sherry Wood Aged 12 Years uses a three-pronged “creative approach where each facet is combined in harmony to deliver a rich and balanced taste. The result is a multi-layered single malt Scotch whisky with notes of fruit cocktail, lilting spices, honeyed caramel and chocolate sweetness—an enrichment of BenRiach’s signature sweet, fruit-laden style. This luscious single malt Scotch whisky takes pride-of-place in the award-winning range made by our unconventional Speyside distillery.”

A Revival of a Revival

Scotch lovers are patient because their patience is so often rewarded with incredible spirits. Such is the case with The GlenDronach’s 15 year old expression, The GlenDronach Revival, which recently returned to shelves after a three-year wait. A favorite among single malt enthusiasts, the Revival honors The GlenDronach’s history of exploring the rich depths of sherry wood maturation and continues the distillery’s legacy of greatness. Like the BenRiach 12 Year expression, the 2018 Revival release won Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, the competition’s highest honor.

Barrie extolled the expression, saying “today marks the return of The GlenDronach 15 Year Old Revival, an iconic aged expression of critical acclaim, revered by connoisseurs around the globe. After years of slumber, this relaunched expression embodies The GlenDronach signature style of Spanish oak maturation in fine Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry casks from Andalucía. Over 15 years in the darkness of our dunnage warehouses, the spirit has grown in stature, refinement and intensity.”
