Golf Classic Charity Partner Spotlight: University of Arizona Cancer Center

Aug. 25, 2016

As a part of this year’s coverage for the upcoming annual Breakthru Beverage Charity Golf Classic–teeing off September 29 and 30–Breakthru Arizona is proud to spotlight its charity partners, all of which have been instrumental in making this charity golf tournament a yearly success.

This week’s spotlight: The University of Arizona Cancer Center

“Cancer is Arizona’s greatest killer with more than 12,000 deaths and 32,000 new diagnoses each year,” said Dr. Andrew S. Kraft, Director of the University of Arizona Cancer Center.

Since being established in 1976, the UA Cancer Center’s mission of achieving freedom from cancer is one that Arizonans can relate to and appreciate.

“Almost every resident has been affected by cancer either directly or via the diagnosis of a friend, relative, spouse, child or parent,” said Dr. Kraft. “Advances have occurred, but now we need to take a giant leap forward toward the cure for all cancers. And we are all in this together.”

The UA Cancer Center is one of the nation’s 45 Comprehensive Cancer Centers–a prestigious title awarded by the National Cancer Institute–and serves the entire state of Arizona.  The Cancer Center is a leader in research on women’s cancers (breast, ovarian), men’s cancers (prostate), gastrointestinal cancers (colon, pancreas and liver), lymphoma and skin cancers. It is also home to one of the largest Cancer Prevention and Control Programs among the nation’s Comprehensive Cancer Centers, with leading prevention research in breast, colon, lung, prostate and skin cancers.

Earlier this year, the UA Cancer Center was selected to serve as a host site for one of the National Cancer Moonshot Summit events, a nationwide discussion on cancer launched by Vice President Joe Biden, who lost his son–Beau Biden–to a lengthy battle with brain cancer in 2015. Regional summits, such as the one the UA Cancer Center hosted, was the first to focus broadly on more than 100 types of cancer, rather than one specific form of the disease. The event brought together individuals and organizations representing the entire cancer community to collaborate to find a cure within the next five years, and included remarks from Dr. Kraft, as well as Mr. Biden.

Charity partnerships for the UA Cancer Center go a long way in helping the center fund their life-saving programs, research and treatment. This year’s partnership between the UA Cancer Center and the Breakthru Beverage Charity Golf Classic will have a direct impact on helping the organization extend and enhance the lives of those suffering from Cancer.

“The funds raised by the Breakthru Beverage Golf Tournament will go to translational research efforts aimed at homing in on the most effective treatment efforts based on precision medicine, immunotherapy, and new drug development,” said Kraft.

Breakthru Arizona is proud to partner with the UA Cancer Center to help support them in all of the wonderful work they do in cancer research and treatment.
